What is Brain Wave Entrainment?

Brainwave entrainment or synchronization is the practice that aims to cause the brainwave frequency to fall into step with a stimulus. This is also called the frequency following response. In the late 1600’s a Dutch scientist, Christian Huygens, observed an interesting phenomenon concerning pendulum clocks where were mounted on the same wall.

He began experimenting and would start the motion of each clock’s pendulum at different angles and rates of speed. Each time the experiment was conducted the clocks would begin to synchronize and within a short time, they would become perfectly synchronize at the same angle and rate of speed.

People also experience this frequency following response. We have been exposed to various types of Brain Wave Entrainment (BWE), and have not known it.

Here are some examples:

  • The beating of drums
  • The sound of a ticking clock is soothing to newborns
  • The flickering of fire is mesmerising to most people
  • The way the sun shines through trees
  • Waves on the beach

BWE has a wonderful side effect of synchronizing the hemisphere of the brain. Synchronized hemispheres contribute to improved intellectual functioning of the brain.
